Kunath grew from our work for KIFF Aarau, a cultural venue housed in a former animal feed company. Drawn by David Lüthi in 2015 for the venue's identity and logo, it has since evolved into a full family from Regular to Heavy, refined through years of practical use. The roughness of the industrial housing initially inspired certain forms, but the typeface has grown smoother and more refined over time, adapting for broader usability across different scenarios.

Rooted in the clarity of constructed geometrics like Futura and Avenir, Kunath draws on the German Schulbuch Bayern tradition. Where schoolbooks prioritized legibility for children, Kunath channels that pragmatism into cultural communication: open counters, measured rhythm, and thoughtful terminals ensure readability with sophistication.

Kunath adds a spark of Roger Excoffon's expressive energy—structure moves, geometry surprises. Open terminals, generous counters, and precise proportions balance rigor with warmth: systematic yet spirited, precise but never rigid, playful without frivolity.
